Artist and tutor

I am an artist who loves nature and being outdoors in the landscape. I create prints, paintings and mixed media artwork based on the natural world using sketchbooks to experiment and explore ideas, developing larger pieces related to these explorations. Alongside my practise as an artist I love to share my passion for nature and art to others through teaching and tutoring, supporting others in their artistic journey.
My work comes from my observations and memories of the landscape. I love working from sketches, found objects and photographic references. Being outdoors in nature brings me the sight of new exciting scenes.. I stop to sketch or photograph things for future work and bring leaves, feathers and other found objects home to draw from later.
I make my artwork using a wide range of 2D art forms, including watercolour, oils, acrylics, colour pencils, printmaking, stitch and drawing materials. The process of working with materials helps to develop the piece in conjunction with the visual appearance of a scene or object.
As well as my landscape painting, I am also fascinated by drawing the human face and the figure. I find drawing people fascinating. It is a great discipline and helps keep my eye and co-ordination trained for all my other work. I am an experienced printmaker, specialising in working with lino, drypoint, collagraph and screenprint and for 12 years ran a print and painting studio in Brighton.

Tutoring
I am a fully qualified teacher of Art and Design (PGCE) and have been teaching adults and young people since 1992. I currently run weekly workshops and one-day workshops around Brighton. My students often say that the weekly class is a highlight of their week. I create an environment that feels safe and that helps to make every participant feel valued and cared for. I aim to pass on the skills of painting, drawing and printmaking to other people and take great joy in seeing people progress and learn. I love to help people explore their creativity alongside gaining new skills to make art.
Other interests
As well as my art, I have some would say a crazy passion for rock climbing. It takes me to some amazing places and I get the best views. It really places me in amongst it with nature and touching the rock and seeing all the textures is wonderful.
